| From 1843 to 1869, more than a half-million people from several small towns along the Missouri River set out to follow the Oregon Train. Their goal was to begin new lives in what is now the western United States. Many emigrants traveled in wagons that carried their worldly goods along with supplies needed to survive the trip. These wagons were known as "prairie schooners" because of their distinctive shape and the fact that they provided an alternative to traveling by sea-going vessels. Through music, this composition portrays four scenes along the Oregon Trail. |
